Face Recognition Technology

Face recognition is the most familiar and frictionless biometric available today. Iris ID pairs deep-learning face recognition with iris technology to deliver fast, contactless authentication — on its own or fused with iris for the highest assurance.

01

Why face recognition

The face is the biometric people already use every day — to unlock phones, cross borders, and greet each other. That familiarity makes it uniquely suited to high-throughput identity programs.

  • Frictionless — authentication happens at a glance, with no cards, PINs, or physical contact.
  • Fast — capture and matching complete in under a second, keeping lines and lobbies moving.
  • Familiar — users need no training; looking at a camera is the most natural gesture in biometrics.
  • Flexible — works at range and in motion, from access control readers to enrollment kiosks.
  • Hygienic — fully touchless operation suits healthcare, food processing, and shared environments.
02

From photographs to deep learning

Early face recognition measured fixed geometric landmarks — the distance between the eyes, the width of the nose — and struggled with pose, lighting, and aging. Modern systems are built on deep neural networks trained on millions of faces. Rather than measuring a handful of features, they learn rich mathematical representations that remain stable across expression, lighting, eyewear, and time. This shift moved face recognition from a convenience feature to a credible security technology.

03

How it works

A camera captures a live image of the face. The system detects the face, normalizes it for pose and illumination, and encodes it into a compact template using a deep-learning feature extractor. At authentication, a freshly captured template is compared against enrolled templates — in verification (1:1) or identification (1:N) mode — and a decision is returned in well under a second. Templates are mathematical representations; the original image is never required for matching.

04

Liveness and presentation attack detection

The value of any face system depends on knowing the subject is real and present. Iris ID applies AI-powered presentation attack detection (PAD) to distinguish live faces from photographs, screen replays, and 3D masks, so that a match is always a match against a living person — not a reproduction.

05

Stronger together: face and iris fusion

Face recognition delivers speed and convenience; iris recognition delivers unmatched accuracy and stability. Iris ID platforms capture both modalities in a single glance and fuse their scores into one high-confidence decision.

  • Higher accuracy than either modality alone, with false match rates suitable for national-scale programs.
  • Graceful fallback — if one modality is temporarily obscured, the other still authenticates.
  • One capture, two credentials — dual-modality enrollment happens in a single session.
  • Consistent performance across demographics, lighting conditions, and environments.
06

Where it is used

Iris ID face recognition operates in the same demanding environments as our iris technology.

  • Access control for offices, data centers, and critical infrastructure.
  • Time and attendance with touchless clock-in.
  • Airport and border journeys, from check-in to boarding.
  • Enrollment terminals for national identity and civil programs.
