The iris presents approximately 240 identifiable points — far more than a fingerprint — yielding a false match probability on the order of 1 in 10^78. Capture takes seconds and requires minimal training, making iris the fastest path to a confident identification at booking.

Iris identification cuts the time and labor of intake processing and reduces the downstream cost of identity errors — misidentified detainees, wrongful releases, and repeated manual record checks.

Iris recognition is in daily operation across corrections and border agencies: the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, York County, and New South Wales Corrective Services all rely on it, and the US Border Patrol enrolls roughly 100,000 iris records per month.

Iris records captured at intake become durable evidence of identity across a subject's history with the justice system, linking bookings, transfers, and releases to a single verified individual regardless of aliases or altered documents.

The FBI's National Iris Repository now holds more than 2 million iris record sets and grows by approximately 100,000 records per month, giving participating agencies a rapidly expanding national resource for iris-based identification.
